Print Materials

From front on, the two papers look very similar, the difference is subtle.

Fine art paper is textured, soft and has a matte like surface whilst maintaining a perfect reproduction of sharpness and detail. Fine art paper is the classic look and most popular choice.

Metallic features a special silvery-shimmering surface finish, giving an image more pop and depth at the cost of slightly less textural sharpness and detail.

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag® 308gsm – a white, 100% cotton paper with a textured surface – guarantees archival standards. With its premium matt inkjet coating Photo Rag® meets the highest industry standards regarding density, colour gamut, colour graduation and image sharpness while preserving the special touch and feel of genuine art paper.

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Metallic 340gsm – a natural white, 100% cotton paper with a high-gloss metallic finish.

Hahnemühle Photo Rag® Metallic features a special silvery-shimmering surface finish. The high-gloss premium inkjet coating with a unique metallic effect guarantees impressive printing results with bold colours and deep blacks. The sophisticated silver metallic effect underscores the image and makes photographs with high-contrast tones shine.

Please note, the shine of Metallic Paper is best seen in person. When you move around the print the light is reflected back to you and the shine can be seen.

Unframed artwork should be handled as little as possible. Fine Art Paper is designed to last a long time, but it is also delicate and care needs to be taken when handling.

Fine Art Paper is used in the worlds finest museums because if treated properly will last over 100 years.

It also looks gorgeous, gives true colours and won’t turn yellow after a few years like standard paper – thats because it is acid free.

Standard paper was not created to last a long time, yes it has it’s place but Fine Art Prints isn’t it.

Here are some tips on how you and your family can enjoy your prints now and for generations to come.

Fine art prints are delicate so avoid touching the print surface with bare hands as the moisture and oils from your skin can affect print quality.  To avoid damage hold prints by the edge or wear cotton gloves while holding them.

  • Ideally, take your print straight to a framer, do not take it out of the protective tube.

  • If you’re handling or framing the print yourself, please wear white cotton gloves which are lint-free and designed for handling art.
  • Where artwork must be handled without gloves, please wash your hands prior to touching. Natural skin oils and moisturisers can easily damage the print. If it is possible for you, do not touch your print without gloves. Do not touch the printed image with your skin, only the white edges.
  • Please use two hands to support your print, be very careful not to allow the print to bend as creases are permanent. You may want to ask for help from another person.
  • Be careful not to scuff or scratch the image side of the print. Never attempt to rub the surface of the image with your finger or fingernail as this could easily scratch the surface of the print.

  • Store prints properly; protect them form airborne contaminants, moisture, UV light and high temperatures.

  • The cardboard tube your print has arrived in is not suitable for long term storage. However, your print is safe while wrapped in the special acid free tissue paper that we have provided.
  • When displaying prints in frames, mount them under glass to minimise exposure to humidity, smoke and the atmospheric contaminants. UV glass is the premium option to maximise protection from UV rays, whilst improving the look of your artwork.

  • When framing leave a gap between the glass and the print.

  • Do not display framed fine art paper prints outdoors.

  • Framed or unframed, avoid placing prints in direct sunlight as UV light can cause the colours to fade over time.
  • Never use cleaning products or water as this may permanently damage the print.

  • Be very careful with dusting, do not rub the print, even a soft rag can result in damaging the print.

  • If using compressed air, apply short bursts while keeping the nozzle at least 12″ back from the face of the print.

  • Do not blow on your print as you may inadvertently deposit water droplets that can mark your print.
